Wicker basket cube technique

We’ve offered large wicker baskets like this one for several years. The same manufacturer in Franconia produces a smaller version for children, which is also popular with adults. The children’s wicker basket, like the larger version, is made with a technique providing highly stable basket with smooth, clean surfaces inside and out. The basket is equipped with two wooden skids underneath: a traditional way to protect the floor known from rustic furniture. Starting from the bottom, the weaver constitutes a perfect rectangle and inserts along all four sides the willow cuttings. The manufacturer is a fourth generation master workshop and one of the last today that trains apprentices in this work intensive manufacturing technique, bringing a traditional craftsmanship back to life.

This laundry basket has little in common with its - significantly cheaper - competitors, which are hawked by flying merchants up and down the country. Good laundry baskets were already made in this way more than 100 years ago: in the so-called cube technique, i.e. with a double-walled wickerwork, which on the one hand ensures a very high stability and on the other hand a smooth surface on the inside as well as on the outside. On the underside, as has always been the case with such traditionally crafted utility baskets, the basket is equipped with smoothly polished wooden runners to protect the bottom. The construction of the basket begins with the bottom, into which beams are inserted all around. Bent upwards, the beams form a framework that is woven out using the cube technique. The workpieces are made freehand without a mold. Our manufacturer is a fourth-generation master craftsman and one of the last to produce and train in this time-consuming and therefore cost-intensive method. But baskets of this type are not only solid: in case of emergency (which rarely happens) they can be repaired, unlike their plastic counterparts.

The wicker basket is available in two sizes: a large one for laundry and a small one that can be used by children, but is just as appealing to adults. The children's wicker basket is made of the same material and just as elaborately as the large one.
