Weekender bull leather small
General Information
We have a weakness for historical templates - for good reason, because what has stood the test of time is a testament to quality and great utility. Like the old doctor's bags, for example, which - made of strong leather and finished with sturdy clasps - were designed for one-time purchase and daily use over a long working life. We have them manufactured by experts according to classic models in the same material opulence that makes a long bag life possible in the first place. You can get the Weekender in this design with cognac-colored bull leather and the lining made of sheepskin only at Manufactum.
Elegant appearance. Best workmanship
This is the little brother of our big Weekender made of bull leather. Equally opulent in material and features, it also resembles the old doctor's bags in shape, which were designed entirely for stability, durability and functionality, so that they could withstand the daily continuous load for a working life - and as an heirloom usually even longer. This bag is ideal in size for short trips and business trips. It holds everything you need for an overnight trip. In our opinion, however, it is far too beautiful to be shown to the world only when traveling, and is also an elegant appearance as a large handbag suitable for the office or city.
The Franz Hammann Fine Tannery manufactures the small Weekender in this configuration and size especially for us: the best bull hides of southern German and Austrian origin are vegetable tanned and aniline dyed in Italy. In the process, the pigments penetrate deep into the leather so that its natural surface remains visible and a beautiful patina can form over time. The body is worked with neatly turned edges, open leather edges are carefully smoothed, dyed and waxed. The handles are extremely comfortable to hold, thanks to the cotton wicking cord lining underneath: it adds volume and stabilizes. The corners are additionally protected by leather trim, and the reinforced bottom has six small metal feet. If necessary, a shoulder strap can be attached to the body via sturdy leather receptacles and solid metal fittings.
Everything in view
As with the earlier in Germany common doctor's bags, the Weekender is provided with concealed worked brackets (old Italian models, for example, have outside visible metal brackets) and can therefore be opened wide and across the entire width. Eye-catching and almost an exceptional piece itself is the sturdy, wide zipper made of metal with 12 mm wide teeth. It is made by an Italian company that manufactures components for military and geological outfitters. Polished teeth ensure that it is very smooth and poses no danger to delicate fabrics.
Inside, the bag is lined with soft, natural-colored sheepskin, which is also used for the slip pockets incorporated into the sides. A zippered pocket on the outside holds travel tickets, cards and small items, and tabs with collar button closures hold a newspaper or umbrella.
Finest Leather Goods by F. Hammann, Offenbach.
The “Fine leather goods factory” Franz Hammann based in Offenbach (one of the German centres of leather goods manufacturing) is one of the oldest leather manufacturers in Germany. The family-owned company has been producing high-quality leather goods and travel accessories for five generations. The Hessian leather goods are as sophisticated as they are durable; some models require the use of old special machines. Hammann has decades-old experience in leather crafts, especially in producing leather bags and cases complete with frames and handles. Precise workmanship and high-quality materials play an even more significant role here than in leather crafts anyway. To ensure the quality of its leather products, Hammann produces at its headquarters (and has done so since 1864) while processing exclusively full-grain leather of European origin. Locks and fittings are made in Germany. Here too, the details make the difference: all locks and fittings are milled from solid brass and alloy steel and get polished by hand. You might recognize the mirror-bright surfaces featuring a shine that “drum-polished sheet metal parts” could never give off.
