Structure and function. Exemplary
This tea towel made of strong, absorbent linen shows different weaving techniques, giving it a special feel and look that becomes even more pronounced after washing. The fabric shrinks by about 5% overall, but the different weaves shrink differently: The waffle weave, for example, only acquires its plastic structure after the first wash, while the plain weave hardly changes at all. The individual weaves also differ in their function and serve different purposes in the kitchen. Voluminous weaves with long floats provide higher absorbency, due to the large surface such a fabric also dries quickly. Dense, granular woven cloths are well suited for glass polishing, while double-layer woven ones can trap a lot of air and thus also replace the potholder once in a while or protect hands when carrying hot plates.
