    General Information

    A heart for quandaries

Mill, checkers, chess and backgammon - they form the holy cloverleaf of strategy board games for two players. Almost every child knows the rules of the game of mill, which has been played since Byzantine times.

We cannot vouch for equanimity in the course of the game, but we can assume that this version of the mill game will accompany you patiently for many game evenings. The game board is made of solid, oiled beech wood and can withstand even loud clattering mills effortlessly. The game pieces are turned from the tagua nut and are thus literally bone-hard - the careful polishing certainly makes it easier for you to always keep track of your pinch mills. Because quandaries are as loved as they are feared in this game:

On the game board, three squares lying inside each other are connected by lines. In the first part of the game, the players take turns placing their nine pieces on the corners or intersections with the aim of placing three pieces next to each other - in other words, to form the so-called mill. The player who succeeds in forming a mill may remove one of the other player's pieces from the game, provided that this piece is not part of an opposing mill. Once all the pieces are set, the players try to make a mill by moving their pieces along the lines.

In the double mill, also called a pinch mill, the opening of one mill closes another - a clever maneuver that the other player can only counter by forming his own mill in the next turn and thus removing a piece from the open opponent's mill. In this way, the players lose their stones in the course of the game; if one of them has only three stones left, he/she may also jump with his/her stones. The game ends when a player has only two pieces left - mills have become impossible.

As you can see, mill is a game that can be grasped quickly - but like checkers, chess and backgammon, it is anything but a game of chance: it requires a good overview, forward thinking and tactical skill to achieve victory. For children as well as for adults, it means entertaining, exciting entertainment - and the youngsters can train their cognitive skills in a playful way.
