Liguria is famous for its lemons, which are often used in Italian cuisine. Soft amaretti have been produced in Sassello in Liguria since 1860. And the place where the little delicacies were made quickly established itself as a local meeting place - so much so that the square where it was located was referred to as "Piazza degli Amaretti Virginia" on contemporary postcards. This in turn attracted imitators, which is why the founder had the Virginia brand placed under the protection of the laws of the Kingdom of Italy as early as 1897.
