Snail barrier copper strip

Unfortunately, even potted plants attract hungry slugs and snails: we have the answer – self-sticking copper foil strips. Put them around the pot, directly under the rim, and you have a highly effective slug deterrent. Some say that slugs and snails get an electric shock when they touch copper. This may or may not be true, but one thing has been proved: Copper sets off an unpleasant reaction (due to oxidization) once the creatures’ natural body slime comes into contact with it. This reaction deters the slugs from trying to crawl over the copper strips. The rings don’t need to have any particular shape; important is the material – pure copper plate.

That snails get an electric shock when they come into contact with copper is a theory that is as widely held as it is unproven. What is considered certain, however, is that the slime produced by the snails, when combined with copper, causes a chemical reaction that damages the animals' mucous membranes through oxidation processes - ultimately preventing the animals from crawling over a copper strip.
