Razor hard tissue
General Information
This straight razor with hard fabric handle scales was part of our wet shaving range for a long time - until Dovo took it out of the program. The Solingen-based cutlery manufacturer is producing it again exclusively for Manufactum: with the same handle scales and now also with a full hollow grind for an even closer shave.
Made in Solingen. Straight razor from Dovo
With its extremely sharp, fully hollow-ground carbon steel blade, the straight razor cuts beard hair deeply and thoroughly, yet cleanly and gently at the same time. Please note that the blade is not stainless. However, the use of carbon steel has two advantages: 1. it can be hardened and tempered (tempered) better than stainless steel and the blade is sharper and 2. the blade retains its edge longer. You can support this by using a leather honing belt. After shaving, the razor should be left to rest for at least a day, as the blade will straighten itself during this time. Then leather the blade with very little pressure. If the razor blade is not used for a longer period of time, it is advisable to oil it, for example with Ballistol. The handle is made of water-resistant hard fabric and is therefore very easy to clean. It forms a good counterweight to the blade so that the razor lies balanced in the hand.
The razor is equally suitable for left- and right-handed users. However, handling it requires a little practice, which is why we supply detailed instructions for use and care with it.
Material portrait hard fabric
It is said that we have a preference for old materials. This is not true, as there are excellent new materials and you will of course also find products made from them in our range. However, there are a number of old, tried and tested materials that are functionally, haptically or aesthetically superior to their modern substitutes. One of these materials is hard fabric, a 70-year-old synthetic material in which a textile linen fabric is pressed with thermosetting plastics. It is by no means a material from yesterday. Hard fabric is still used in many special technical applications: in engine construction, in electrical engineering and generally as a machine part, for example as a gear wheel, because it is hard, abrasion-resistant, thermally highly resilient and electrically insulating and can be shaped using both woodworking and metalworking techniques. It is a fascinating material because - unlike thermoplastics - the raw materials do not disappear and the construction principle remains visible: The texture of the carrier fabric shines through clearly even when sanded and polished. Its structure remains visible in the material. Manufacturers of high-quality knives also continue to use hard fabric - Micarta, which is highly valued by collectors as a handle material, is often nothing else.
