Rattan carpet beater

Long gone are the days when all carpets were taken out into the backyard or garden every week to be beaten with a carpet beater over a carpet pole or, in winter, laid "upside down" on the snow - depending on the size of the carpet, an exhausting task that could be heard from afar. With the invention of the vacuum cleaner, the carpet beater may have lost its importance in this country, but it is far from extinct. In the event of a power cut and as an alternative to the vacuum cleaner, it is still an efficient household utensil for beating out not only carpets, but also blankets and comforters. Unfortunately, there is one downside to dusting in this way: carpet rods are no longer so easy to find.

Unfortunately, our carpet beater does not come from the former beater-making metropolis of Germany (1840 to around 1985), Neuensee in Franconia, where production had to be discontinued due to a significant drop in demand. However, it is just as classically made as it was back then: it is made from just three long rattan stalks pulled through in one - in technical jargon, this is known as pulling, not weaving. The sun-shaped head provides a large surface for effective cleaning. The handle is tightly wrapped with rattan at the top and a metal sleeve encloses the rattan ends at the bottom. Woven by hand, each carpet beater is slightly different: The rattan is sometimes thinner, sometimes thicker, it can be very rigid or sometimes a little more flexible.
