This is what product development looks like at Manufactum. It's not unusual for us to approach our manufacturers* with an idea for a product - or for them to approach us - and we work together to create good things for our range. In the case of this rain gauge for your garden, we were particularly keen to offer an alternative to the usual plastic versions. The material of choice: crystal glass. The glass funnel sits snugly in a holder made of weatherproof galvanized steel.
It's raining, it's raining. The earth gets wet
You can use it to underpin meteorological observations - but also to determine what the evening shower after a long day of sunshine has really brought to the garden (sprinkle or not?). In this greatly simplified version of Hellmann's Ombrometer from 1886, a mark on the millimeter scale of the glass cylinder corresponds to the amount of precipitation in liters that fell per square meter.

Fun for the weather buffs – was last summer really the third wettest on record? – but also useful for gardeners who might want to know, for example, exactly how much rain fell during that brief late-afternoon shower (do I have to do the watering or not?!). Our rain-meter is a simplified version of the Hellmann Ombrometer: one point on the millimetre scale of the glass container is equivalent to one litre of rain per square metre. Galvanized steel (8 mm in diameter), length 137 cm. Crystal glass funnel, height 21 cm, 12 cm in diameter max. Weight 1.2 kg.
