Spring messenger
In Portugal, a beautiful custom for over a hundred years: Barn swallows like this one, made of ceramic and hand-painted, decorate house facades, balconies and interiors throughout the country as harbingers of spring. The bird was designed in 1891 by the famous Portuguese artist and caricaturist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, the original of which can still be found in Lisbon in the famous Tabacaria Monaco. Since that time, the ceramic bird has almost become something of a national icon as a constant companion and "house friend" for the Portuguese.
It is still manufactured where it once originated - in small manufactories, with the old mold stock and by hand. Ours comes from Caldas da Rainha, north of Lisbon, where the ceramic factory Faiancas Artisticas Bordalo Pinheiro is located.
Decorative garden ceramics
It is considered a typical representative of the garden ornamental tradition in its homeland, and is still made where it was once created - in small manufactories, with the old mold stock and by hand.
