Planter Vase d'Anduze

The famous planters from the Cévennes town of Anduze were once often used to decorate chateau gardens and manor houses, and for this purpose were usually planted with orange or lemon trees. As a symbol of a centuries-old pottery tradition, such vessels still characterize the townscape of the Cévennes town of Anduze. According to legend, their shape goes back to the Florentine Medici vases. However, French potters soon moved away from the lavish garland decoration of the models and instead designed a much more restrained decoration, as can be seen on this planter.
