Notebook leather and book cloth

These notebooks, made in southern Germany, show ideally that a designer's aesthetically motivated aspirations can indeed give rise to added functional value (which, unfortunately, is anything but the rule). In this case, the "function" follows the "form" to a certain extent: The declared design goal was the seamless and open-edged processing of a cowhide leather (the same material from which we have our writing pad made), with which one cannot conventionally bind a book block due to its material thickness of 3 mm. Consequently, a separate solution had to be found for its fixation, which took the form of an insert connected to the leather cover by rivets and eyelets. This in turn, designed as a cover, opened up the option of not binding the book block firmly but merely inserting it, which has the advantage that a written book block can be removed and archived and replaced by a new one. The result: a material opulent, yet design unobtrusive notebook with a fantastic feel, which more than relativizes its price by the possibility of lifelong use.

We have the insert (originally made of felt) made especially for us from a rare material: a coarse, grippy binding fabric, which 1. an absolutely unusual carrier material: a blend of flax and tow (the latter - a short-fibered flax derivative - is traditionally used as a sealing or insulating material), 2. owes its robustness to a starch finish (in pre-PVC times, the treatment of choice for much-used library volumes).
