The car coat originated in the golden era of the automobile. In open-top cars, it protected its wearer against piercing wind and cold weather. At the same time, it was tailored so that it took into account the limited space available on the vehicle seat, and thus did not obstruct the driver‘s freedom of movement – which still makes it an appropriate companion today, and not only when driving.
The cut of our Moleskin car coat is long enough to cover a jacket and features a luxurious collar with distinctive stitching.
The concealed button placket ensures that little wind can pass through, thus allowing the coat to fulfill its original purpose with flying colors.

Moleskin is a heavy cotton fabric woven in a satin weave with strong warp yarns and an extremely high weft density (up to 400 threads per inch) and then sanded and coarsened in a multistep process.
At Cotonificio Carlo Bonomi in Lombardy, Italy, who have been cotton weavers since 1860, all of these steps and more take place under one roof to create our moleskin fabric: the selection of the best raw cotton, the weaving and dyeing, and the finishing of the cotton material. So that the machines can handle the high weft density, the Moleskin is manufactured on looms that run slower than today‘s standards.

The Kastell factory for men's attire in Hösbach in Lower Franconia employs a two-track business model. They have been manufacturing custom tailored clothing for leading German and foreign firms for years. And, in 1968, six years after the debut of their first men's collection they established the Kastell brand. Manufactum has worked closely and productively with Kastell for years.
