    General Information

    Infinite patterns

Don't be surprised if it gets quiet in the children's room. It's not always mischief that's brewing, most of the time your offspring are just intensively occupied with a game, especially if they can develop their creativity as imaginatively as with this laying game. At the same time, the game promotes patience, concentration and, last but not least, the fine motor skills of your offspring. In turn, we wouldn't be surprised if you yourself love to sit down and tirelessly think up new figures and try out new patterns - because these four shapes in four colors yield an almost infinite number of possibilities.

A mathematician, a wood engineer and the consequences

It is no coincidence that the surfaces that can be laid are already reminiscent of Penrose parquetry. In fact, Peter Hufer, developer of this tile-laying game, was inspired by the British mathematician and physicist Sir Roger Penrose when designing the wood fiber tiles: Two regular rhombuses - one wide, one narrow - with diagonals whose ratio to the edge length corresponds to the golden ratio form the basis. Already with these two rhombus shapes, as Penrose found, parquet surfaces can be laid that are closed to infinity.

Hufer, whose curriculum vitae ranges from carpenter to wood engineer and building biologist to energy consultant, and who has always been (and still is) characterized by creative work, took Penrose's idea as a model, but unlike the mathematician, he combined not only two rhombuses, but four shapes for his laying game - by dividing the wide rhombus once again, with the cutting angles also corresponding to the golden section. With the four shapes created in this way, particularly multifaceted, open patterns and figures can be laid in addition to the closed parquet surfaces: From the individual letters of the alphabet to the unicorn to the starry nebula, so to speak, everything is possible.

The tiles are manufactured in cooperation with Werkhaus, which you already know from our office range as a manufacturer of intelligently designed organizers. For these sturdy, even children's hands calmly accept laying plates 3 mm thick MDF boards are cut exactly and painted in color: four shapes in four colors, which not only the mathematician's heart beat faster, but also let the imagination fly happily and freely. Get started!
