    General Information

    Taken from the Hamam

The Turkish steam bath, the hamam, has a rich tradition in the Arab-Mediterranean region and is still an integral part of bathing culture today. For centuries, a visit to a hamam has followed the same ritual sequence, during which visitors pass through various rooms. The temperatures there slowly rise from 30 °C to as high as 55 °C, allowing the circulatory system to adjust to the heat. At the same time, each room serves its own purpose: resting at the beginning, exfoliation and cleansing, relaxing massage, stimulating water showers or nourishing oil baths, and the final resting phase that brings the cleansing ritual to a close. During the hamam visit, visitors are wrapped in a so-called fouta or peshtemal (also pestemal), which are traditionally woven by hand at home or in small businesses. Over the centuries, this has developed into a craft that is passed on and cultivated from generation to generation. Typical features of hamam cloths are the traditional striped patterns and fringes. They are made as a flat cotton fabric, so that they are absorbent on the one hand, but can also dry quickly again. Thanks to these properties, the hamam cloths are not only used in the steam bath, but are also popular as a towel, blanket or scarf.

In this country, the lightweight hamam cloths have also long conquered sauna and bath, beach and garden. Space-saving, absorbent and fast drying, they are also ideal companions for travel or day trips. Our Hamam bath towel comes from the Framsohn weaving mill. It is woven from soft, fine cotton with optional rosé or gray stripes on the natural white, twill-bonded base and shows the typical, here slightly shorter fringes.
