Gym Mat Vachette Leather

Here comes a veritable gymnastics mat (for which this term is actually, as it is also recommended as a mattress for sleeping, resting or meditation, an inadmissible understatement), which we - in the absence of noteworthy and viable alternatives - have made ourselves: from materials formerly proven for such purposes at Christoph Hack in Cologne.

As an upper material serves about 2 mm thick, vegetable tanned cowhide - so-called Turnvachettenleder, which is still used today for the production of quality Turnböcke or jumpers verwandt. The whole topside is seamlessly made of one hide - for 2 sqm of surface about 5 sqm of raw leather are needed, which must weigh at least 50 kg before tanning; such leather is rare and can only be found in so-called 50 bulls. It is undyed and greased; in the course of time it takes on a dark patina, which makes it visually more and more beautiful.
The inner padding is a latexed coconut mat, a material with enormous resilience even after years of use. It was the traditional cushioning material for a long time, until it was replaced by the much cheaper composite foam. An enclosing padding wadding provides a softer transition to the top material. The underside of the mat is made of a 3 mm thick wool weave felt, which also serves as a warming base when using the mat as a guest mattress.
The corners are additionally reinforced, on the two narrow sides are metal zippers (from the Swiss manufacturer Riri), two screwed leather handles each facilitate transport.
