The honesty of ceramic tableware
An authentic design that emphasizes the special nature of the material, implemented by experienced traditional craftsmen in Europe - our ideas of ceramic tableware are very precise. In close collaboration with the Cologne-based designers of the Onomao design label and a pottery in Portugal, we have created mugs, bowls and plates that are exactly as we imagined them: pared back, reduced to the essentials and yet unadulterated in terms of color, feel and functionality.
Even the light sandy tone of the tableware is thoroughly honest: free of additional pigments, it is the result of the original color of the body used - and is characteristic of the region in the north of Portugal where the pottery operates. Each individual piece of this ceramic tableware highlights the character of the material and emphasizes it emphatically - in its very own way. We only applied the glaze to the inside. This makes the fine-pored structure of the clay tangible on the outside, in the truest sense of the word. With every use, with every dish and every drink that you serve with this tableware, traces become visible, the material changes its appearance and develops a patina. This is how a coffee mug transforms into a personal everyday companion.
Good to know, even better to use: Fired in the oven at temperatures above 1,200 °C, this tableware is dishwasher, oven and microwave safe. The mezze plate fits as a lid on the bowl as well as on the deep plate - and yes, the espresso mug can also be used as an egg cup on the breakfast table.
Design meets craftsmanship. Onomao
Our search for a partner company capable of realizing our idea of Manufactum-appropriate tableware led us to Onomao in spring 2022. This young Cologne-based label was born from the idea of combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. When brothers Arthur and Felix Wystrychowski - one a landscape architect, the other a trained chef and graphic designer - founded their company in 2018, it was clear to them that resource-friendly production and fair trade should not remain empty words. With a long-standing connection to Atlantic waves, the country and its people, the two passionate surfers traveled to Portugal and went in search of people who (still) understand their craft, who work with local raw materials, with carefully extracted natural and recycled materials and with whom they can implement their design ideas. This is how the brothers came across the pottery, where our simple, partly matt-transparent glazed ceramic tableware is now produced. Now in its third generation of family ownership, this craft business north of Porto is committed to maintaining and preserving the regionally rooted art of pottery.
