Past and future. A journey through time to the Schär coconut weaving mill
Coconut weaving was once a widespread industry in Europe and especially in Germany, but today there is almost nothing left of it. At August Schär KG, the original production method has been preserved as if in a time bubble. However, this is by no means with a museum-like attitude, but for the reason that modernization has been postponed until the old machines and techniques are once again in demand. The company is located in the idyllic Eisenschmitt in the middle of the Volcanic Eifel and has been active in the processing of coir fibers into high-quality carpets and mats for industry, trade and private households for over 75 years. When most other coir weaving mills had to close down, Schär was able to expand its stock of old machines, which is why the company is technically secure in the long term. Coconut fibers are somewhat bulky to process, but have unique properties. The products made from them last "forever", they harmonize the room climate due to their ability to store excess humidity, they do not absorb dust and are very easy to clean. As coconut fibers are exposed to extreme stresses in nature, they develop a correspondingly high level of resistance. Coconut is flame retardant, sound and heat insulating, breathable and antistatic. However, dyed goods should not be constantly exposed to strong sunlight. Coir carpets have a rustic surface structure; irregularities in the yarn are unavoidable and add to the charm of the product. Schär's product range also includes doormats for house entrances and red carpets, which are obligatory at state receptions in many countries. The employees work on mechanical production lines that are no longer found in this form anywhere else in Germany. The coconut products are in great demand because of their long shelf life and resistance. Schär obtains the natural coconut fibers from India and Sri Lanka; further processing may consist of dyeing, setting up the looms, the actual weaving and the subsequent cutting and finishing in the sewing room.
