Compact master comb ebonite

Large salon comb made of ebonite with coarse and fine teeth, making it suitable for any hair and length. May also be used outside the salon.

The “New-York Hamburger”, as the company is known in short, is one of the few companies that has been based in Hamburg since its foundation in 1880 and still produces in Germany. One reason is their unrivalled technological lead in the production of hairdressing combs made of ebonite. Ebonite is a hard rubber compound based on natural rubber and sulphur, which in its properties is very similar to buffalo horn. It is elastic and at the same time torsionally rigid, dimensionally stable and antistatic. Its name derives from the resemblance of its deep black colour with ebony. The chemical and heat resistant ebonite combs have proven to be extremely robust; under the rigours of everyday salon life, ebonite is still the material of choice for combs. The Hamburg-based company sells its ebonite combs under the Herkules-Sägemann label. At the company’s headquarters in Lüneburg, they are processed by hand in around 40 work steps: the teeth are sawn out with specially developed diamond cutters, rounded and then polished. The resulting combs feature double-conical teeth with an even, burr-free surface and glide gently through the hair and over the scalp – hairdressers all over the world swear by these combs.

A whole chemical industry makes attempts to combat it but it can often be remedied with simple and natural means, namely the excess grease in hair, its brittleness and roughness. Combs made of wood and horn are still the best helpers in the care of greasy hair, since they are affiliated to it. They absorb excess skin grease and take it where it is most needed, namely to the tips of your hair. Since these materials barely charge hair electrically, irritation of the pilomotor muscle which controls the grease supply by the sebaceous glands is avoided. At the same time, hair is gently untangled and smoothed. Our selection of combs also features the highest possible processing quality – only in this way can hair be combed gently. The comb teeth and spaces between the teeth are carefully sawed, rounded and polished in processes appropriate to the relevant material – for horn and wood, ebonite and cellulose acetate.
