The cleaning brush is as inconspicuous as it is important when preparing espresso and coffee with portafilter machines. The brush can be used to clean the sieve in the portafilter before the next filling without it losing its temperature. This is because rinsing it under water would cause the metal, usually highly conductive chrome-plated brass, to cool down too much and the coffee could not be brewed at the ideal temperature. Cleaning between each brewing process, on the other hand, is important to remove pomace residue so that the pores in the sieve do not become clogged. However, these intermediate cleanings are no substitute for thorough daily cleaning of the portafilter and portafilter.

People with visual impairments also work in Iris Hantverk's workshop. Brush manufacturing is traditionally a branch of work in which people with visual impairments and even blind people can be trained. Iris Hantverk was founded at the beginning of the 20th century as a company set up by the Swedish Association for the Blind, and this tradition continues to this day: visually impaired craftsmen in Sweden and Estonia still assemble the brushes entirely by hand.
