Chess pieces Staunton
General Information
Finest Indian craftsmanship. International tournament standard
The handcrafted production of chess pieces has a long tradition in India, where not only the most, but often also the finest chess pieces in the world come from. The craftsmanship of Indian artisans is particularly evident in the design of the knight - the only piece whose head has to be carved by hand (and therefore always varies slightly). The detailed knight of this set of figures turned from boxwood also shows the individual traits of hand-carving. The basic design of these chess pieces goes back to a set that was designed in the middle of the 19th century and named after the English chess pioneer Howard Staunton. The Staunton set quickly became the international tournament standard due to the clear definition - and not least the aesthetic advantages - of its pieces. With their durable base, each individual piece sits comfortably in the hand and demonstrates appropriate stability even in furious chess battles.
