Central American hammock

"K'uyuy" means "to weave." The word, which sounds quite unusual to European ears, comes from the indigenous language Quechua, which is widespread in the Andean regions. It also stands for: To weave threads, to connect threads. In 2014, a company in the Allgäu region of Germany gave itself this name to support a social center (Centro social) in Nicaragua with its orders. People with physical and mental disabilities who, due to their condition in their home country, have little chance of social participation and a regular income, find meaningful employment there and make hammocks in the best Central American tradition and craftsmanship. The figures speak for themselves: for each hammock, approximately 1,260 meters of cotton thread dyed with natural dyes are processed by hand in 17 working hours and 36,000 loops are woven. The result is a finely meshed, airy and yet extremely resilient mesh fabric that adapts to your body shape and feels very comfortable, especially on warm summer days. Not only an advantage at home, but also when traveling: our Nicaraguan hammock can be folded up small and stored in a space-saving way. For this purpose, a transport bag is included. The cotton used comes from El Salvador. Together with a local project partner, K'uyuy is currently working to enable the controlled organic cultivation of cotton locally in Nicaragua. The proceeds from the hammock sales will be used, among other things, to advance this project.
