The Franconian comb maker Groetsch has been making combs and brushes by hand since 1848. The family business, now in its fourth generation, only uses natural materials that, with the exception of the horn, come from the region. The combs are made especially for Manufactum from the elastic wood of the wild service tree. It belongs to the rose family and is related to the pear tree. The wood has fine pores, making it relatively waterproof and flexible. With the exception of the rather short curling comb, the combs are fitted with a stabilizing bar made from the very tough wood of the beech. The teeth are individually sawn and polished to a mirror finish over the entire surface, including the gaps where it is most important. The base of the teeth is carefully rounded and the tips are as smooth as porcelain. The scalp is massaged soothingly and not scratched. The careful polishing means that the wood requires no further surface treatment and acquires a nourishing patina during use. Domestic wood is also used for the brushes - usually hard pear or beech wood - which is processed by hand, simply oiled and then trimmed with natural materials such as wild boar bristles, soft goat hair or cactus fibres.
