General Information
Heat instead of chemicals: thermowood.
Our ancestors knew an extremely simple and nature-friendly method of permanently protecting wood from environmental influences: thermal treatment, which does not require any chemical additives. The wood (ash) is deliberately changed at 180-220 °C and virtually "caramelized", which leads to the darkbraunen color. During this process, some components of the cell walls (hemicellulose) are broken down, transformed and recrystallized. The remaining elements close the cavities that are released. After this cell transformation, the wood absorbs hardly any water. This is why it does not swell and shrink even when exposed to high humidity. And it loses its tendency to warp and crack. Thermowood is thus an ideal material for things that frequently come into contact with water.
