Bats, which like to live near human settlements, are inconspicuous but efficient insect eaters: a bat will eat up to 1 kg of flies, mosquitoes, and gnats in one summer. But their natural resting places (like cracks in walls) have become hard to find. This bat box made of larch wood is a welcome alternative: The extended back wall provides the bats with enough space to land, and the raw cut surface and notches give them something to hold on to. All joints are glued shut because bats don’t like draughts. The form of the bat box, which narrows towards the top, accommodates their preference for belly and back contact.
