Angel felt

Of the messengers of the God some even claim that they are the message itself. The ethereal beings face man in human form - with one essential difference: they carry wings, symbol of their supernatural being. This is what distinguishes the angels: the closeness to man, the affiliation to the heavenly God. As mediators between heaven and earth, between God and man, they come in peace and bring at Christmas time the Good News of Christ's birth.

The essential features of the angelic figure are taken up in these angel figurines: Freed from plush and pomp, their winged body is simply bent from wire, wrapped with the same New Zealand virgin wool from which the head is felted - thanks to this delicate purism, the angels seem as ethereal as their ancestral appearance. Perhaps they do not whisper audibly "peace", but the message they depict all the more clearly for it: as a decoration of the small gift or the festive table, in the Christmas mobile or window decoration and not least in the branches of the Christmas tree.

During her backpacking tour through Nepal, the Dane Gry Staunstrup got to know the astonishing openness and warmth of the country’s inhabitants, and their craftsmanship bedazzled her. She was able to observe in detail how adeptly and skilfully Nepalese women felted wool into a wide variety of objects. Staunstrup felt it was time to make something good out of the untapped potential, and an idea was born: to combine Nepalese handicrafts with Danish design. And the idea was immediately followed by action.

The company Gry & Sif started producing a variety of products made of wool felt in Nepal in 2000. The designs created by Gry Staunstrup are as remarkable as they are understated and, characteristic of Danish design, at the same time fresh and merry. Nepalese women turn them into products employing traditional handicrafts. Fair Trade certified by now, Gry & Sif stands for fair wages and working conditions, environmentally conscious production and transparency. The company exclusively sources pure new wool from New Zealand sheep for the felting; each of the resulting products is handmade and unique.
